Feeding the Laminitic horse

Want to know which feeds you can give your Laminitic horse?

Feeding a horse with laminitis is a balancing act between managing their weight and feeding enough to help their hooves repair.

Feeding the right feeds can mean the difference between being healthy and having a reduced risk of laminitis or suffering more painful bouts of the disease.

With so many feeds available, and the information from feed manufacturers often misleading, finding a good feed can be hard work.

A well balanced diet low in sugar and starch with the required vitamins and minerals will keep your laminitic horse healthy and happy and help improve hoof quality. So how do you find the right feeds and balance the diet?

Here's how:

Use our on-line diet builder, FeedXL to find the right feeds and make a diet for your laminitic horse

Well, I have had my daughter's pony officially diagnosed with Cushing's last week. He is now on the prescribed medication and some herbs. Hoping to see an improvement soon. Without this program I probably would still be fumbling my way through the minefield of suitable feeds. He is now on an appropriate diet and loves it. Fingers crossed that by xmas we still have a pony plodding round the paddock.

There are over 500 feeds in the FeedXL feed database.

The high sugar, high starch feeds that are not suitable for a laminitic horse are marked in red and should be avoided.

The low sugar, low starch feeds that are suitable are in black, making finding the right feed really easy. Simply choose which right feeds you want to use.

FeedXL also helps to balance your diet

FeedXL allows you to specify if you horse is an easy, normal or hard keeper and if you would like your horse to lose, maintain or gain weight, making weight management for horses with laminitis simple.

FeedXl calculates your horse's nutrient requirements and uses easy to read reports to show you if the diet is balanced or not. If the diet is not balanced, FeedXL provides information to help you get it balanced.

There are also user forums where you can chat with other FeedXL users about your horse's diet and how you can improve it.
